The horsemeat scandal in 2013 has resulted in consumer awareness of food fraud being greater than ever before and therefore, so has the demand for food manufacturers to demonstrate the authenticity of their products. Please note, the majority of our ELISA and PCR tests are accredited. If they are not accredited we have flexible scope for some ELISA and PCR based methods so please ask the laboratory if you are interested in having a particular test accredited, please contact us.

  • Qualitative Meat Species – choose: Cattle, Horse, Pig, Sheep, Chicken, Deer, Goat, Pheasant, Tomato, Garlic, Langoustine, Tuna, Cod, Haddock, Catfish, Coley/Pollock.  (Please check for other fish species available)
  • Bespoke Species ID (pure samples only) by Sequencing
  • Bespoke Species ID (primer design)
  • NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) – all species in a sample

Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) – Authenticity Testing at Its Best

Traditional tests detect 1 species – and you need to know what you’re looking for. SYNLAB’s NGS authenticity testing identifies thousands of species – from the domestic and farmed, to the obscure and exotic.

This new technology exploits advances in DNA sequencing that allows for rapid determination of DNA sequences in a sample. Our NGS test uses the technology of the future to provide on-going security to the food supply chain and peace of mind for consumers.

The SYNLAB NGS test provides identification of over 7000 meat and fish species present in any given sample. No longer do you need to ask “is there beef/chicken/cod present?”  The question now is “what’s in my sample?”.

Supported by Food Standards Agency, DEFRA and Technology Strategy Board, this service has been developed by our own molecular biologists and in collaboration with the University of Manchester to reduce food crime and ensure transparency in the food supply chain.
